“Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.
For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;
for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.”
Psalm 95:1-7
David uses gratitude to the Lord in Psalm 95 to affirm His greatness in strength
(our Rock), essence (our King) and relation to mankind (our Maker). God by
nature is great which is exhibited in His love toward mankind by forgiving and
redeeming us. It is an attribute that describes the extent and magnitude of God’s
character which is beyond the ordinary.
David’s three-fold call to express gratitude include joy, reverence and obedience.
Joy in coming before Him with a happy and peaceful spirit. Reverence in
positional submission of attitude and action. Obedience in not hardening our
hearts as we listen to His voice. Jesus modeled greatness by humbling Himself
as a servant. Our greatness is measured by our response to God and our service
to others.
