“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”
Psalm 19:7
The Book of Proverbs is a book written by Solomon all about wisdom! Proverbs are brief statements that convey a specific truth for practical living in a form that is easy to remember. Their literary form is mostly couplets - two clauses generally related to each other - that provide an object lesson using comparison or analogy.
The difference between the Book of Proverbs and other written proverbs is that God’s Word is never inaccurate, does not contradict and always is highly moral. The Book of Proverbs is not a hodgepodge of unrelated statements, but rather a story of a young man learning about the wisdom needed for life! Nothing is off limits in this practical, hard-hitting, current, and spiritual book of the Bible.
Here are five tips for understanding the Book of Proverbs. First, focus on general themes and gather them together in a topical format. Second, focus on the generalized truth and don’t complicate it. Third, understand proverbs are guidelines - general principles according to the way life generally operates. Fourth, understand them in light of the culture of the time. Finally, remember they are general statements of truth rather than divine promises.
